As carpet ages it loses some of its tension & stability. If the carpet is not stretchrd back soon, the pile sitting higher will prematurely wear out. OSH NZ has been cracking down on these loose carpet issues due to the accident hazards carpet humps can present. We can restretch carpet back into shape, trimming off any excess. $9- m2.
The Importance of carpet stretch and Power Stretching your Carpets: All carpet makers and the Carpet & Rug Institute (CRI) recommend that all new carpets be "power stretched," at time of carpet installation.
Most carpet installers are paid by the metre, and they don't take the necessary time to use the power carpet stretch method. Often times, when not installed with a power carpet stretch, new carpets will begin to ripple and wave in about 16 months.
However, when stretch carpet is done by Auckland Carpet Steam โ€nโ€ Dry, you can expect your carpet to look better, feel better, clean better and last longer.
Pull the carpet away from one corner using pliers until you can get a good grip with your hands. Continue to pull the carpet away from the ย tack fix ย strip, being careful to keep seams intact, especially around doorways. Since you are restretching an existing carpet, you will leave the tack fix strip along one full wall and pull up the other three sides.
Use pliers to remove the staples from the padding then pull it back. If you don't remove the staples first, the pad may rip because most of it is made of a foam type of material.
Remove the old tack strips, using the pry bar. The tacks are extremely sharp so a pair of work gloves is a good idea to use here.
Lay the new tack fix strip in place with the tacks pointing towards the wall and secure them to the floor with nails driven into the pre-set holes. Place the strips without gaps between them, especially at the corners.
Staple the padding back in place. Use a staple every 3 inches and along seams.
Stretch the Carpet.
Rent a power carpet stretcher and knee kicker if you don't own them. It's probably a good idea to ask a friend to help at this point. If you have never used a power carpet stretcher, have someone at the rental company give you a run down on how it works.
Start power stretching, beginning at the center of the wall that has the carpet that you left attached to the tack strip. Carpet stretch a section then move over 18 inches and stretch another section, each time pulling the carpet and hooking it onto the tack strip. Continue in this manner, first working your way towards the side of the room that has a door. Then repeat on the other side, starting in the middle and working your way out as before.
Carpet ttretch the sides. This time you only need to start about a foot away from where you pulled back the carpet. Stretch and hook the carpet onto the tack board in the same manner as before and then stretch and secure the other side.
Use the knee kicker in areas that are hard to get to, such as corners and around built in cabinets. Sink the teeth into the carpet about 6 inches from the wall and use your knee to push the tool and stretch carpet towards the tack strip. Grip the edge of the carpet and pull it onto the tacks as before.
Run the carpet cutter along the baseboards and cut the carpet side, leaving the backing intact. Use the utility knife to trim around corners and built-ins, then cut the backing and leave about 1/8-inch carpet overhang to tuck under the baseboards.
Finish your carpet stretching job by pushing the edge of the carpet fix into the tack strip and
under the baseboards. A screwdriver and hammer will do the job, but a quicker way is to use the carpet cutter. You won't be cutting the carpet, just forcing the front edge of the carpet cutter into the carpet and dragging it along the wall. This will mash the carpet into the fix tack strip and force it underneath the baseboards in one movement.
Water from indoor pot plants without a suitable tray, causes the surrounding carpet to rot. This breaks down the carpet construction, also harbouring harmful fungus spores. If left too late, this carpet area may need to be replaced with a good piece of carpet from a mat or closet. $65 per carpet patch.
High wear areas can open previously fix joined carpet. This can also be a hazard, if not professionally heat bonded and re-seamed back together. $45 per seam.
Heavy foot traffic, improper installation or poor quality--whatever the cause of your split carpet repair seam, the repair calls for minimal skills and tools. You can have those curled-up edges tacked down in no time-- without the cost of a service call.
Cut carpet tape (available at hardware and home supply stores) to fit.
Pull back one edge of the carpet. Using a pencil, draw a line on the floor along the edge where the other part of the carpet meets the floor (see A). This will determine the center point where you'll place the tape.
Pull back both edges of the carpet to make room for the tape.
Remove the tack paper from both sides of the carpet tape.
Center the tape over the pencil line, then lay the tape on the floor (see B). Get help for this one if you can; it's easier to apply the tape fixed if someone holds up one of the carpet edges for you.
Slowly roll down the carpet on the tape, making sure the carpet's edges meet.
Walk on the taped area or place a heavy object over it.
Renovations fix of all kinds can change the flooring type or layout, whether it be butting carpet up to tiles/vinyl etc or wall divider changes. In most cases the carpet can be made to fit the changes. Quoted on site.
95% of carpets over a year old that are exposed to natural elements, show signs of colour loss. High traffic areas will also lose their colour. In this state the carpet is particularly vulnerable to setting in stains, this lost colour can be re-applied and guaranteed to last as long as the original carpet colour. $12 per m2 of effected area.
How to "Repair and Dye Bleach and Faded Areas in Carpets and Rugs"
Understanding is better than just instructions. Every situation is a little different so I will give you a full scale of situations and remedies and recommend the one I see as the best all around solution for 99% of the situations out there.
Clean the carpet well with a Hot water extraction Unit.
Bleach spots/stains in carpet can be caused by many things such as bleach, peroxide, cleaning products, pet urine, facial medications, sun fade, and many others.
The carpet can be made of a number of different fibers that act differently to the bleachย ย ย causing agents and more importantly act differently to the dyes that are used to recolor, redye or repair the carpet.
Yet what ever it was that caused the carpet bleach stain and to fade and what ever the carpet is made of it should be cleaned with a hot water extraction cleaning system to rinse out and neutralize what ever it is that caused the bleached and faded out areas in the first place.
Watch the video at www.carpetdyesticks.com to come to an understanding of colors andย ย ย ย how to think in terms of warm, cool and sand tones of carpet colors.
All colors are one of or a mixture of red(warm),Yellow(sand) and/or blue(cool)
Different textures and different brilliance can make colors look and appear differently yet for the most part carpets are of a Matt or flat color brilliance.
Watch the video over again to come to a good grasp of what you are going to do. For example the video says to not get in a rush and yet it still only takes 5 min. this is because looking and analyzing the colors as you put it on and not after you think you are finished will assure you that you are able to do it in just one try.
It is really easy so just relax and take your time to think of red hues yellow hues and blue hues as you go along. Most bleach stains and faded spots will be yellow or greenish you will consider this when repairing and removing the bleach stains.
There are many ways to get the bleach spots and stains out or redyed in carpets yet only carpet dye sticks can cover red stains and plant stains where the fiber content has been altered by the stain causing agents. Carpet dye sticks can be used on all colors and hues for carpet and on every fiber content and carpet type no matter what the stain was caused by. Even so there are other options.
Most readily available are art pens and markers, yet they are Very bright and brilliant in color and will not match the colors of the carpet in brilliance and the colors are not easily mixed for achieving the right tones of color match. For really smal spots they may be an option.
Carpet patches can be made and I will address this in another article.
There are many who sell carpet dyes and they (the dyes) come in different strengths and dilutions.
The strongest are like inks and the most diluted achieve very little color change.
The very strongest dyes (ink like) must be applied with an air brush and the precision of an artist. the weaker the dye or in other words the more filler (salts and leveling agents) it has in it the easier it is to use yet the less effect(color change) it will have on the carpet.
I recommend liquid carpet dyes only for trained professionals who have the ability to analyze the carpet fiber content and the pH of the stains plus have the necessary wetting agents and equipment to dye with liquid acid dyes.
Carpet dye sticks are designed and developed for safety and ease. And can make more color match and color change than any other carpet stain and bleach spot remover kit on the market.
Carpet dye sticks can be used on all colors and hues for carpet and on every fiber content and carpet type no matter what the stain was caused by.

How to Repair Creaky floors: Wood Floors under Carpet
The remedy here will depend on how much your carpet is worth. An effective fixremedy is easily carried out with the carpet in situ, but you will cause a small, but invisible amount of damage to the carpet. First, track down the offending squeak, then cut a small slit in the carpet, making sure that you do not cut any of the pile.
Through the slit first drill a small pilot hole that is slightly smaller than a nail and either drive a fix nail, or even better, a wood screw through the board and into the joist. A screw is always the better choice. Once it is in it definitely wonโ€t ever come out unless it rusts away because of some other problem associated with damp.
